Enemy of God Revisited
Kreator
THE REVIEW:
Now this is a music DVD.
German metal titans Kreator have taken their best album to date, “Enemy of God,†and combined it with striking concert footage and other extras on “Enemy of God Revisited.†Best of all, the music is remixed in Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
The main attraction is an hour-long set at last year’s Wacken Open Air festival. Such a huge stage demands a complementary production, and Kreator pulls out all the stops: quick cuts, smoke and shadows, strobe lights, whiplash headbanging and a dirty patina over everything, to go with the band’s razoring, surgical thrash.
The concert is expertly edited, as sharp and tight as the music. Separated frames are utilized for multiple vantage points, and slow-motion adds weight to the already crushing display.
Of course all of this would lose much of its impact if the crowd wasn’t responding appropriately. But like everyone knows, Europeans love their metal, and they display it here. The DVD shows a sea of humanity whipping long hair and throwing horns. Chants of “Kreator, Kreator†often break out between songs. They’re rewarded with a mock-hell finish. This DVD is the next best thing to being there, a must for Kreator fans and a welcome addition to any metal-head’s collection.
As a bonus, Kreator offers three songs filmed in a German nightclub. While the sound and camera work is strong, it pales in comparison to the Wacken show. The film’s sheen doesn’t accurately portray the slaughtering sound.
The entire “Enemy of God†CD is available in multiple sound options, with the lyrics unrolling onscreen, quaking visuals corresponding with the music and flashing graphics. The video for the title track — with its demon child plotline — is included, along with a making-of documentary, and an animated clip for “Dystopia†and the winner of a video contest for the song, “Impossible Brutality.â€
